Prepare the supports
- Depending on the type of surface and its old coating, allow a few hours before starting to hang the new wallpaper.
- The walls must be properly prepared and sanded with the appropriate grit sandpaper.
Painted walls
Wash with a special wall detergent, then rinse. On glossy and satin paint, sand with sandpaper so the glue can adhere.
New or porous walls
Apply a plaster primer or pre-paste 24 hours in advance. This protects the wall and allows the wallpaper to be removed without damaging it.
Before we begin
- The rolls must be inspected along their length before installation.
- Choose a glue suitable for the type of paper (vinyl paper, standard paper…).
- During gluing and installation, keep a bucket of clean water and a sponge handy to remove traces of glue, clean the wallpaper roller or wash your hands.
- Dark-coloured wallpapers may require tinted edge touch-ups to avoid a white line.
- Draw a vertical line 52 cm (one standard strip width minus 1 cm) from the door or the corner of the wall. This is the axis along which you will hang the first strip.
The cutting
- Measure the height to be wallpapered and add 10 cm for trimming at the top and bottom. Unroll a roll on the table and mark the length that has just been calculated.
- Fold the paper back on itself and crease the fold.
- Cut the strip with scissors.
- It can also be cut with a cutter and a ruler.
- Stack the strips on the table and number each strip at the top, in the order of installation.
The gluing
Traditional wallpaper
- Lay the strips on the table, pattern side down. To prepare the glue, follow the manufacturer's instructions to obtain the correct consistency. Let the glue rest for 10 minutes before using it.
- Using the brush, apply paste to about half of the strip, from the center outwards. Pay particular attention to the edges. Fold the pasted section back on itself without flattening the crease.
- Repeat the same process for the other half of the strip, working from the center outwards. Pay particular attention to the edges. Fold the glued section back on itself without flattening the crease.
- Repeat the same process for the other half. Allow the fabric to soak for 5 to 10 minutes.
Non-woven wallpaper
- Prepare the wallpaper paste according to the dosages and instructions for use indicated on the product.
- Apply the glue directly to the wall using a roller or a glue brush.

- Apply the adhesive directly to the wall using a roller or a pasting brush.
Pre-glued vinyl
- Prepare a 55cm wide container filled with water to soak the sheet.

- To install the strip, start at the top
Position the wallpaper strip according to the markings, remembering to extend it about 5 cm towards the ceiling for trimming. Smooth it down with a wallpaper brush, working from the inside out to remove any air bubbles. Check from a distance that the strip is correctly positioned. If necessary, carefully peel it back and reposition it. Unfold the entire length, carefully following the markings. Smooth down the entire surface. Remove any excess paste with a damp sponge and use a wallpaper roller to smooth the edges of the strips to ensure they are completely adhered. Repeat this process for all subsequent strips.
Non-woven wallpaper
- To hang non-woven wallpaper, start at the top of the wall:
Unroll the roll and position the paper, without cutting it (unless it's a pattern repeat), along the guide line. Allow it to overlap by about 5 cm (2 inches) for trimming. Smooth the wallpaper with the wallpaper brush, working from the center outwards to remove any air bubbles. Trim any excess at the ceiling and baseboard using the wallpaper smoother and a utility knife. Repeat these steps for the rest of the surface. Run a wallpaper seam roller over the edges of the strips to prevent them from curling up. Remove any excess paste as you go with a damp sponge.
